2018 ( USA ) ( Biography, Comedy, Crime )
Starring: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek
Director: David Lowery
A few months ago, Robert Redford announced he was retiring from acting, and this is possibly his last film. Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker and his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 followed by an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. His method is simple, involving a briefcase, a false moustache and absolutely impeccable manners. The title focuses our attention on Tucker’s greatest weapon – because he’s old, he’s not viewed as a threat. Police chiefs can hardly be bothered to investigate his robberies. When a happily married, existentially bored cop, John Hunt (Casey Affleck), decides to dig into Tucker’s past, Tucker is excited by the attention and robs a ton of gold.
The Old Man & the Gun is a well-told story brought to life by a beautifully matched cast and is a ‘must see’ for anyone with a serious interest in Redford’s long and remarkable career. If this is the Sundance Kid’s swansong, it’s certainly a good one.
