Twenty-four years after the original Toy Story (1995) comes the fourth feature in the franchise. Toy Story 4 is an emotionally rewarding film that joyfully reintroduces old friends alongside a new roster of engaging characters. It takes some kind of genius for the Pixar animators to give such a searing emotional charge to a story in which one of the main characters is a single use plastic fork retrieved from a bin. The story picks up with Woody and Buzz now belonging to the toddler, Bonnie. Woody is being played with less and less, and begins to question his own worth and value in the world. This is only compounded by the arrival of Forky, a creation of Bonnie that’s made from a fork and some playdough, who wants nothing more than to be rubbish. Woody attempts to reason with Forky that his purpose in life is to be a friend to Bonnie, and that without that purpose, he’s nothing.
Heart-warming, funny, and beautifully animated, Toy Story is a perfect animated saga. Adults and kids alike will find the film’s mix of comedy and pathos hard to resist
